Beneath the steel tanks and automation systems, a biogas plant is a carefully managed ecosystem, trillions of microorganisms from four distinct communities, each processing the previous community's output, in a sequential chain that ends in methane production.

The four-stage biological process

Hydrolytic bacteria first break complex carbohydrates, proteins, and fats into soluble fragments. Acidogenic bacteria ferment those into volatile fatty acids. Acetogens convert the acids into acetate, hydrogen, and CO₂. Finally, methanogens, ancient archaea, not bacteria, combine these intermediates into methane.

Each community prefers different environmental conditions, which is why digester management requires continuous balancing of temperature, pH, retention time, and feeding rate, parameters defined in IWRREC's anaerobic digestion operating standard.

Preventing process upsets

Nearly every digester upset traces to the same cause: feedstock composition or loading rate changed faster than methanogens could adapt. Acids accumulate, pH drops, and gas production stalls.

IWRREC's process monitoring guidelines recommend continuous volatile fatty acid tracking, gradual recipe transitions, and operator competency certification, preventive measures that treat a digester as the living system it is.
